I was a fraud in a first-class seat
On a plane full of retirees
Just like the Canada geese in
The end of snowbird season
And the only thing I wanted to know
Was it too early for a rum and coke?
Would it sit well with my breakfast food?
What are the standards at this altitude?
The lady from Brantford said
She used to know Wayne Gretzky as a kid
To my left, a guy from Yellowknife
Who used to work inside a diamond mine
Sweaty palms and quiet prayers
Germs danced in the pressurized air
It was too short a flight for a movie
So we got reruns from the CBC
I had to get out of Florida
I don't know why I chose Ottawa
But I couldn't wait to walk its streets
And find the first bar off of Dalhousie
In a cab along the Rideau Canal
I was questioning my rationale
What, if anything would escape solve
And is it worth the expenses involved?

Let the gutter punks have their way
For a cigarette and some loose change
With a skateboard and a beat-up guitar
A world full of false starts
Life can be found on every street
Along Catherine's to the Rue St Denis
We sit silent and watch it go by
As we do all the time
And I could fall for you
I've done it before
But we know things are best
When these feelings are just
Left ignored
This is the last song that I'll write for you
I'll act like i'm certain, I'll pretend that that's true
'Cause in my mind you were just an ideal
That couldn't be less real
